FinFish Disease Seminar
In 2010, one of Syndel Asia's aims was to connect with farmers from all sectors and educate them on the importance of proper management to prevent the outbreak of disease. Thus we had a series of seminars based on Finfish Disease and ways to prevent the outbreak of disease.
Usually in aquaculture, parasites are the primary cause of disease. When fish are cultured in crowded conditions, parasites find it easy to flourish. During ideal conditions, parasites seldom grow to numbers that can overwhelm a fish. However, in crowded conditions, fish are often stressed by low oxygen, by being in contact with so many of the other fish, and bad water quality. These conditions cause the immune system of fish to be depressed and then they are more susceptible to disease. Often when there are too many parasites, the parasites can inflict severe damage to the epithelium of the fish. When the outer protective layer of the fish's skin has been penetrated, the secondary infection sets in- usually bacteria and fungi. Thus the key point is to control parasite infestations. If the parasite infection can be controlled, then there is seldom any need to use stronger medications like antibiotics and antifungals.
In the first 6 months of 2010, Syndel Asia has organized 4 seminars on Finfish Disease and Management. We had 2 seminars in Rawang and Semenyih mainly for the food fish farmers and there has since been extremely good response on the standard operating procedures that we have suggested for the farmers. The main point was to use anti-parasiticides as routine prevention and then to use beneficial bacteria to maintain good water quality so that the parasites will not proliferate. Some farmers have reported a dramatic increase in production as the prevention of disease was controlled.
Another seminar was also organized, this time in Layang-layang, Johor. This seminar focused on the diseases that affect ornamental fish which as we all know is a huge export industry for Malaysia, recording 600 million sales annually. This seminar was held in Layang-Layang, which has for a long time been the hub for ornamental fish production due to its proximity to nearby airports and Singapore. Thus far, response has been excellent as we work with the farmers to develop the ornamental fish industry by utilizing modern management practices using approved and registered products.
Last but not least, a seminar introducing approved and registered product for the ornamental fish industry was organized in Lawan Kuda, Perak. Together with the breeders and exporters, we hope to be able to contribute to better production and management of the fish ponds. However, the breeders are currently facing some land issues with the Perak state government. We hope that the issues can be solved amicably soon.
